Meluri, a region celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and economic potential, officially became the 17th district of Nagaland on February 21, 2025. In a historic event held at the public ground in Meluri, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially inaugurated the youngest district of Nagaland.

Rio, addressing the gathering as the special guest, reflected on the district’s formation, which was officially notified on November 2, 2024. He expressed his gratitude to the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) for their instrumental role in securing the “No Objection Certificate” and highlighted the importance of continued unity between the Chakhesang and Pochury tribes, as well as the wider Naga community.

Rio also spoke about the district’s rich heritage, noting that Meluri’s administrative center was established 67 years ago, and a Chairman Bench Court was set up in 1958. He referred to Meluri as the “Land of Fortunes,” recognizing its natural and cultural wealth, including landmarks like Shiloi Lake, Tizu River, and the Trade Centre at Avakhung.

During the ceremony, Rio unveiled a commemorative monolith and inaugurated the Multidiscipline Sports Stadium, further enhancing the district’s infrastructure.

Speeches were also delivered by Chief Secretary Dr J Alam, IAS, Advisor Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, and Minister KG Kenye. The event featured a welcome address by Chonpa Jurry, President of the Pochury Hoho, a profile of the district presented by the Deputy Commissioner of Meluri, and greetings from the CPO President.

Rio also took to X to convey his greetings on the official inauguration of the district. “The day marks the beginning of a new chapter of growth, development, and progress for the people of this region,” he tweeted.

“I believe tribal elders, Hoho representatives, and civil society NGOs have an important role in building the new district. On this historic occasion, I urge everyone to work towards fostering brotherhood among areas, villages, & tribes to ensure Meluri reaches its true potential,” he added.
