The Departments of English and Commerce, MGM College, successfully organized a transformative Educational Tour to Sikkim, focusing on the capital city Gangtok, from 18th to 22nd June 2025. The trip provided an exceptional opportunity for students to blend academic learning with real-world exposure, adventure, and cultural enrichment in the heart of the Eastern Himalayas.


The journey commenced on 18th June, with students and faculty travelling towards New Jalpaiguri. Upon arrival at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station on 19th June, the team proceeded on a picturesque drive to Gangtok, offering their first glimpse of the Himalayan landscape. The itinerary was meticulously planned to include a variety of educational and experiential activities:

a. Day One Highlights:
· Visits to Rumtek Monastery and Enchey Monastery deepened students’ understanding of Buddhist philosophy, architecture, and spiritual heritage.
· At the Himalayan Zoological Park, students encountered rare and endangered Himalayan wildlife, including the red panda, gaining insights into ecological preservation and biodiversity.

b. Day Two Highlights:
· An excursion to the historic Nathula Pass (14,140 ft), situated on the Indo-China border, and Tsomgo Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake at 12,313 ft, offered firsthand lessons in geography, geology, and international boundaries.
· A visit to the Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial added a dimension of military history and local legends.

c. Day Three Highlights:
· A full-day trip to Yumthang Valley, renowned as the “Valley of Flowers”, exposed students to alpine ecosystems and the importance of biodiversity conservation.

Cultural Immersion and Economic Insights
The group engaged with members of Sikkim’s diverse communities — Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali — enabling meaningful cultural exchange and sociological understanding. Visits to local markets revealed the region’s flourishing handicraft industry and highlighted tourism’s role in Sikkim’s growing economy.

· Geography & Environment: A deeper awareness of Himalayan geography, including glacial systems, endemic flora/fauna, and environmental sustainability.
