In what it describes as a landmark step towards unity and collaboration, the Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) has been officially formed on October 14, 2024, by several Naga tribal youth organizations and supporting groups in the erstwhile undivided Dimapur.
A press statement issued by the newly formed body’s Executive Council—also functioning as its Nomination Committee—announced that “in any democratic and civil society, every citizen has the constitutional right to freely associate, organize, and form bodies that work for the welfare and well-being of their people.”
The formation of WNYF, it said, is not an addition to what it called “mushrooming organisations,” but a conscious attempt at consolidation. “The concept of unity is the opposite of ‘mushrooming organisations’ as it consolidates the numerous individual organizations under one banner.”
The youth front said its formation was driven by “the pressing need to unite and collaborate in safeguarding the safety, security, rights, and welfare of our people and upholding the true spirit of Naga brotherhood.” It emphasized that “various Naga tribal youth organizations, along with supporting organizations, collectively came under one umbrella to form the Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) in the erstwhile undivided Dimapur.”
The founding member organizations are reportedly all officially endorsed by their respective tribal apex bodies, with one unit awaiting final endorsement. “Each of these organizations are officially endorsed by their respective tribal apex bodies… and have come together in full consensus to represent their respective communities within the WNYF framework.”
Clarifying its scope and nature, the WNYF stated that it “does not claim any administrative jurisdiction,” but its “area of concern includes all regions inhabited by its member communities within the erstwhile undivided Dimapur,” representing “the diverse Naga society as a whole.”
The Executive Council of WNYF currently comprises the Presidents of all member organizations and is responsible for constituting the full leadership structure. The Council also extended an invitation to other Naga tribal youth organizations not yet represented. “This committee remains open and welcoming to any other Naga tribal youth organizations who are yet to join, ensuring inclusivity and unity for all.”
Affirming its values, the Council asserted, “We firmly believe that unity requires not only words but action, commitment, and courage.” It concluded the statement by calling upon other tribal groups to join hands for “the betterment, safety, and dignity of our people.”
The statement was jointly issued by: President, Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur; President, Rengma Youth Organisation; President, Western Chakhesang Youth Organisation; President, Diphupar Naga Youth Forum; President, Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation; President, Diphupar Ao Youth Organisation; and President, Lotha Youth Organisation Dimapur.
