Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker Sharingain Longkumer on Monday, 28 July, announced that the second stage of the much-anticipated FIFA-grade Astroturf at Rempukong, Ungma, will commence soon, with completion expected in about ten months.
Speaking at the installation program of the 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency (AC) office bearers for the 2024–2027 tenure held at Arok Sapang, Ungma, the Speaker said that the project is on track. “Work on the second phase will begin shortly, and in about ten months, the turf will be ready,” he said, adding that the facility will elevate Mokokchung to a sporting destination.
On civil aviation, the Speaker informed that officials had surveyed the proposed heliport in Mokokchung. “The civil aviation department has already earmarked the road for the heliport,” he said, indicating progress in enhancing air connectivity for the district.
He also revealed that a 5-metric ton cold storage unit, funded through the joint contribution of all ten MLAs from Mokokchung district, is ready and awaiting formal inauguration.
In a gesture of gratitude, the Speaker thanked Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse, Minister for Women Resource Development & Horticulture, for designating Ungma Village as a Banana Model Village.
Building on this development, Longkumer announced that an initiative is in the pipeline to train local communities in making biodegradable fibre from banana stems, as part of a strategy to find eco-friendly alternatives to plastics. “We are working towards training and setting up units under 26 Aonglenden AC to create alternatives to plastic using banana stems,” he said.
Longkumer also hinted at a forthcoming program aimed at enhancing youth employability within his constituency. Without divulging specific details, he assured that a formal announcement would be made shortly.
The installation program marked the official induction of new office bearers of the 26 Aonglenden AC unit for the 2024–2027 term, bringing together party workers and leaders.
