Nagaland Government directs mandatory attendance for Independence Day celebrations

The Five Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) has issued fresh directives to all its constituent bodies and affiliated organisations to abstain from participating in State Government functions, including the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2025.

In a circular dated August 12 from its camp office in Dimapur, the Committee instructed that for Independence Day, “public [should] voluntarily abstain from attending the function” and that “no cultural troupes will participate in any form.” It further directed student bodies to ensure “no schools and colleges force their students to participate in celebrations outside their institutional premises.”

The 5 Tribe apex bodies have been asked to direct their frontal organisations and subunits across eight districts—Kohima, Mokokchung, Wokha, Tseminyu, Zünheboto, Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland—to comply with the directive.

The Rengma Hoho, in a separate circular, reiterated that all the CSOs across the eight districts, namely Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Niuland, Mokokchung, Zünheboto, Wokha, and Tseminyu, will abstain from attending Government events, including the Independence Day celebration. It requested all affiliated units – RSU, RSZ, RMA, RGBA, RVCCF, RPOK, RPOD, RPOC, Seven Ranges – to issue instructions to their respective jurisdictions, particularly to educational institutions, to abstain from the celebrations “until further notice.”

The Sumi Hoho also called upon “all Sümi leaders and public residing in all Sümi-inhabited areas to refrain from attending or participating” in the functions, directing its frontal organisations and constituent units to take necessary measures for effective implementation and to ensure “peaceful non-participation” without confrontation.

In Mokokchung, the Ao Senden informed the Deputy Commissioner that, “as per the unanimous decision and general instructions, the Ao Senden and all Civil Societies under our banner will not participate in any Government functions until the issue in contention is fulfilled by the Government.”

In Wokha, the Lotha Students’ Union has directed all the Educational Institutions within Wokha District to abstain from participating in any activities in the forthcoming 15th August Independence Day, 2025.

The Lotha Students’ Union directed all the Institutions to take due note of this directive and further directed all the Ranges, Circle and Units of Lotha Students’ Union to monitor that no institutions or students participate in the Independence Day in their respective jurisdiction.

These instructions follow the Committee’s earlier resolution, adopted during a joint meeting on August 9 at Hotel Ura, Kohima, to indefinitely abstain from all State Government functions until its core demands are met. These include: revisiting the composition of the Reservation Review Commission and revoking the inclusion of members from CSOs; ensuring the Commission’s tenure does not extend beyond six months; and suspending the Backward Tribe Reservation Policy if its outcome is linked to census completion.

Nagaland Govt directs mandatory attendance for Independence Day celebrations
The Home Department of the Government of Nagaland has issued a directive making it mandatory for all government officers and staff to attend the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

In a notification issued on Tuesday, the Home Department directed all Deputy Commissioners to issue instructions to all officers and staff of all departments under their respective jurisdictions to compulsorily attend the Independence Day celebrations on 15th August 2025. “The attendance sheet shall be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner for onward submission to the Home Department for further necessary action,” it added.

The order further stated that all officers and staff of every department located in Kohima must be present at the Civil Secretariat Plaza at 9:00 am for the state-level celebration. Attendance sheets are to be submitted to the Home Department for further action.

The directive follows an earlier circular issued on August 6 regarding participation in the Independence Day celebration.
