The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and the Central Youth Organisation (CYO) of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) have both called for strong action against Enoch S. Wotsa, a government-nominated councillor of the Dimapur Municipal Council and Vice President of the NDPP Youth Wing in Dimapur, after he was reportedly apprehended by Khatkati Police in Assam on August 13 for transporting a large quantity of alcohol.

According to the NPCC, Wotsa was caught in the early hours while reportedly transporting a large quantity of alcohol in a government registered vehicle along two private vehicles.

The party described the incident as not merely a legal violation but a “blatant betrayal of public trust” and a misuse of state resources, demanding his immediate suspension from the Dimapur Municipal Council, the filing of criminal proceedings under relevant laws, and a high-level inquiry into the misuse of government vehicles. It also said that the accused “has brought irreparable shame to the people of Nagaland by misusing state resources and blatantly flouting the law.”

“The ruling NDPP government must answer to the people of Nagaland for nominating individuals with such blatant disregard for the law,” the NPCC said. “This incident reflects the culture of impunity and entitlement fostered under the current ruling dispensation, where power is abused in the interest of the connected,” it added.

“The NPCC reiterates its commitment to ethical governance and the rule of law. We stand with the people of Nagaland in demanding justice and accountability. The government must act swiftly to restore public confidence and demonstrate that no one is above the law,” it further said.

In a separate letter to the NDPP president, NDPP CYO president Imchatoba Imchen expressed “utmost seriousness and deep concern” over Wotsa’s actions, stating that it caused “immense disrepute to the party through his direct involvement in illegal activities.”

“He was caught red-handed smuggling alcohol, a crime that not only violates the law but also breaches the core values of our party,” Imchen wrote, adding that Wotsa’s actions have severely damaged the credibility of NDPP and have particularly stained the image and integrity of the CYO, “which has always strived to uphold the principles of youth leadership, integrity, and clean politics.”

The CYO urged immediate and exemplary disciplinary action “to preserve the dignity of the party and to reinforce public confidence in the NDPP’s commitment to justice and accountability.”
