The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has echoed the recent demand of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), calling for the “immediate implementation of a Landlord–Tenant Registration System in Nagaland.”
In a statement, the CNCCI highlighted the risks posed by the absence of such a system. “On several occasions, anti-social and unscrupulous individuals, posing as businessmen, have taken advantage of the absence of such a system. Many have rented residential properties under false pretenses and engaged in illegal and unethical activities, thereby tarnishing the image of the business community at large,” it said.
The CNCCI further pointed out that similar incidents have occurred in commercial spaces. “There have been multiple instances where individuals have taken shops and commercial premises on rent, claiming to establish genuine businesses. After gaining the trust of consumers, they abscond with large sums of money collected as advance payments for goods and services. These fraudulent acts have, in some cases, involved losses running into multiple crores,” the statement added.

The business body stressed that bringing culprits to justice has been a major challenge. “Unfortunately, bringing such culprits to justice has proven difficult as victims are often left without proper documentation, proof of identity, or details of the fraudsters.
This lack of information makes it extremely challenging for victims to even lodge formal complaints with the authorities,” the CNCCI noted.
The repeated incidents, it said, “not only damage the credibility of Nagaland’s business community but also cause irreparable financial and emotional harm to innocent citizens.”
To address these issues, the CNCCI urged the State Government to take immediate action. “The CNCCI therefore urges the State Government to immediately implement a Landlord–Tenant Registration System across Nagaland to safeguard the interests of both the public and the genuine business community,” the statement concluded.
The statement was issued by Dr Khekugha Muru, Chairman, and Avi Chase, General Secretary of the CNCCI.
