The Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), Nagaland under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has announced a two-week capacity-building programme on Goods and Services Tax (GST) for Nagaland. The initiative aims to create a cadre of trained local youth, designated as “GST Sahyogis,” who will assist traders and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with procedural compliance.
The training will be held in September 2025 at the Central GST (CGST) office in Dimapur and will be conducted by resource persons from the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) Shillong. Sessions will cover practical aspects of GST, including registration, return filing, tax payments, e-invoicing, and addressing common compliance challenges. Participants will also receive hands-on training on the GST Network (GSTN) portal.
The programme has been designed in response to challenges faced by small businesses and traders in Nagaland, where professional Chartered Accountants and GST Practitioners are scarce, particularly in rural areas. Many enterprises struggle with compliance and responding to departmental notices, often risking penalties or non-compliance.
The GST Sahyogi initiative seeks to equip educated youth with the necessary skills to provide affordable and accessible GST-related assistance across all districts of Nagaland. Certified GST Sahyogis will be listed at local GST offices and relevant public platforms, enabling direct access for businesses. Periodic refresher courses and a support network will also be established to ensure continued upskilling.
The CGST Commissionerate and the State Taxes Department of Nagaland are working with trade associations to identify suitable participants for the course. Officials believe the initiative will not only strengthen GST compliance at the grassroots level but also generate meaningful employment for the state’s youth.
