Students of Soul House Academy, from grades five to seven, visited Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Mokokchung as part of their study tour programme. The visit was accompanied by five teachers and the school principal.
The programme began with an introductory session where students interacted with KVK scientists and staff. They were given a tour of the soil laboratory, where Imtilemla, ACTO (Soil Conservation), provided a hands-on demonstration of the soil analysis process. Students also explored the Integrated Farming System (IFS) model displayed in the ATTIC Cell.
Imtisenla, ACTO (Agronomy), guided the students through nursery bed preparation and highlighted the importance of the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) in providing real-time, hyper-local data to support precision farming, improve crop yields, and mitigate losses from extreme weather.
Dr. Sarendi Walling, ACTO (Animal Science), explained the use of Azolla as a feed supplement for poultry production, while Dr. Martha Chakruno, ACTO (Plant Protection), demonstrated pest management techniques, including yellow sticky traps, pheromone traps, and neem oil as repellents.
The students were also taken around the instructional farm to observe different standing crops and technologies promoted by KVK. The visit aimed to provide practical knowledge and firsthand exposure to modern agricultural practices, fostering interest in farming and allied sciences among young students.
Altogether, 29 students participated in the educational tour, gaining valuable insights into sustainable agriculture and scientific farming techniques.
