Mokokchung, 1 October (MTNews): Continuous rainfall over the past several days has triggered multiple landslides along the Mokokchung–Mariani road (NH-702D). According to official sources, more than ten landslides were reported within the last 24 hours, most of which have been cleared by the NPWD (NH) and contractors on site.
However, three major landslides near Changki X-Junction remain uncleared. Sources at the site confirmed that fresh landslides occurred even after the initial debris was removed, making the situation more challenging. The sites have been further complicated by massive boulders mixed with the debris, requiring heavy machinery to clear. Officials added that removing the rocks poses additional risks, as loosened boulders could roll downhill, threatening the winding road below and nearby human settlements.
While all minor landslides have been cleared, personnel on site were engaged in clearing one of the three major landslides when contacted. The other two major landslides, which have completely blocked the highway, are yet to be cleared, it was informed.
Although clearance work is ongoing, sources said the process could take considerable time. The NPWD (NH) has reportedly informed the district administrations at Mokokchung headquarters and Mangkolemba to issue travel advisories for public safety.
Landslides also occurred between the 12 km and 15 km stretch of the highway, between Mekuli and Chungtia villages, on Tuesday morning but were cleared by the department.
No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. Further updates are awaited.
