The inaugural session of a two-day national-level workshop on elderly issues, sponsored by the National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, was held on October 15, 2025, at the Conference Hall of the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University. The event brought together representatives from six neighbouring villages, research scholars, and postgraduate students, encouraging a multidisciplinary and community-based dialogue on issues concerning the elderly.
The session was chaired by Prof. Temjensosang of the Department of Sociology. The proceedings began with a welcome address by the Chairperson, followed by the rendition of the University song, setting a solemn tone for the event. A brief felicitation ceremony was held in honour of Prof. Mala Kapur Shankardass, the key resource person for the workshop.
In her introductory address, Prof. Toshimenla Jamir, Head of Department and Convenor of the workshop, provided an overview of its objectives and anticipated outcomes, emphasizing its importance in the present socio-demographic context. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik addressed the gathering and stressed the significance of academic collaboration, interdisciplinary engagement, and translating research insights into policy frameworks addressing elderly welfare. The inaugural session also featured a melodious ‘Aaholi’ group song by research scholars and postgraduate students from the department, adding a cultural touch to the academic setting.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Mala Kapur Shankardass, retired Professor of Delhi University and a leading expert in gerontology and social policy. She discussed key challenges faced by the elderly, such as social exclusion, financial insecurity, and inadequate policy support, while calling for greater awareness, strategic planning, and integration of sociological research into policymaking.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, who expressed appreciation to all dignitaries, participants, and organizers. The rapporteur for the session was Raja Darang, a research scholar in the department.
