Kohima Police have initiated an investigation into the mysterious death of a 22-year-old woman whose body was discovered near her home at Old Ministers’ Hill Colony, Kohima, on the morning of October 25, Eastern Mirror reported.

Police sources confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged in connection with the case and that an inquiry is currently in progress. While confirming the development, officials declined to disclose further information, citing that the investigation is at a sensitive stage.

To ensure a focused probe, the Kohima Police have also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to handle the case.

According to initial reports, the deceased, a 22-year-old basketball enthusiast, had gone out to play on Friday evening and failed to return home. Her body was found the following morning beside a well near her residence, reportedly covered with firewood and a sack. Upon being alerted, police personnel arrived at the site, and later a forensic team from Dimapur examined the scene before the body was handed over to the family.

AWO, ASU condemn incident

The Angami Women Organisation (AWO), expressing deep shock and outrage over the incident, described it as “a gruesome and inhumane act that has no place in a civilised society.”

In a statement, the AWO called upon law enforcement authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are “swiftly identified and brought to justice.”

It welcomed the constitution of the SIT but reminded authorities that the investigation must be “swift, thorough, and impartial.”

The organisation expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and appealed to the public to support the investigation process while remaining vigilant against all forms of violence and injustice against women. The AWO reiterated its commitment to advocate for the safety, dignity, and rights of women, stating that it would continue to monitor the case until justice is delivered.

Meanwhile, the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) also issued a strong condemnation, describing the incident as “inhumane and barbaric.” The Union said the cold-blooded killing of an innocent young woman had “shaken the collective conscience of the people” and created “an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.”

Calling the act “unacceptable and dangerous, especially for students and the community at large,” the ASU urged the State Government and law enforcement agencies to take “immediate, decisive, and exemplary action” against the perpetrator(s).

It also urged the government to address the growing concern for the safety and security of citizens, particularly women and youth, and to restore public faith in the rule of law.

“The Angami Students’ Union will continue to stand firm against any act that undermines the sanctity of human life,” the statement said, adding that “justice for Vihozhonu Zao must prevail for her, for her family, and for the dignity of every human being.”
