Persistent rain and poor light allowed only limited play on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match between Jharkhand and Nagaland at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Saturday.

After a delayed toss due to morning showers, Nagaland won the toss and chose to field under overcast conditions. The decision paid off as their bowlers struck twice before stumps to restrict Jharkhand to 91 for 2 in 31 overs.

Jharkhand openers Shikhar Mohan and Sharandeep Singh gave the hosts a steady start, adding 37 runs in 11 overs before Saurav S Kumar trapped Sharandeep lbw for 22 off 36 balls. Jonathan Rongsen then provided the second breakthrough, dismissing Kumar Suraj for 9, caught by Nischal.

When stumps were drawn, Shikhar Mohan was unbeaten on 42 from 99 balls, while skipper Virat Singh remained not out on 16 from 44 deliveries.

The match will resume on Sunday with Jharkhand looking to build on their total of 91 for 2.
