Tension has been reported from at least two locations in the Nagaland-Assam border during the last few days even though there has been no reports of violence or untoward incidents.
Chairman of Yajang C village council, Imtionen, told Mokokchung Times over phone that on April 14 last, personnel of Assam police along with some civilians came and destroyed their tea plantation near the border and again on May 5 destroyed an areca nut plantation.
EAC Longchem came for observation, he added. He requested that Nagaland Police personnel be deployed to patrol the area so as to avoid escalation of the volatile situation there provoked from across the border.
Meanwhile, Assam forest personnel were seen in a video footage destroying signboards erected by the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) at their reserve in Tsürang valley. In the said video footage, it was claimed that AKM had put up the signboards “within the territory of Assam at the Dessoi valley reserved forest.”
“Soon after the news got out, forest officials of the New Sonowal circle from the Assam side went to the spot and removed the signboards,” a Northeast Live news channel reported.
In this regard, the Ao Students’ Conference is yet to make an official statement but they will be addressing a press conference at their office in Mokokchung on Tuesday.
