The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) met in Chumoukedima on Saturday and flagged fragmentation among Naga civil society and political groups as a major hurdle in resolving the long-pending Naga political issue, calling on tribal hohos to take the lead in uniting all factions under one umbrella. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

“One solution, not many”: PAC flags fragmentation in Naga talks

Briefing the media after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang said the PAC agreed to intensify efforts in 2026 but acknowledged that the absence of a unified platform within Nagaland continues to weaken collective engagement on the issue.

Zeliang said the committee felt the need for tribal hohos to play a decisive role in bringing all Naga political groups under one umbrella, maintaining that “there can be only one solution to the Naga issue, not many.”

Unlike previous meetings that focused largely on political dialogue with various factions, Zeliang said the PAC discussion shifted attention to internal coherence within Naga society, noting that multiple organisations currently articulate positions independently, often diluting the collective voice.

He said elected representatives function under the Constitution of India and therefore require a single, representative civil society platform to engage meaningfully on the political issue.

PAC member and MLA Achumbemo Kikon said the committee would act as a facilitator in the process this year, though no formal resolution was adopted at the meeting.
