Transport Department warns drivers; authorities to step up inspections and penalties
The The Nagaland Transport Department has raised concern over the state’s low vehicle insurance coverage, revealing that less than half of registered vehicles, only 44.83%, have valid third-party insurance, according to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
Transport Commissioner Elias T. Lotha has instructed all Regional and District Transport Officers, including those in Kohima, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon, Wokha, Zunheboto, Dimapur, and Phek, to intensify road inspections, enforce penalties against violators, and conduct public awareness campaigns about mandatory insurance.
Despite earlier notifications and verification drives, compliance remains unsatisfactory, the Commissioner noted, urging authorities to strictly enforce the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and submit detailed reports on the action taken.
Third-party insurance is mandatory under the law. It protects drivers financially if they cause injury to someone else or damage another person’s property. Driving without it is illegal and can result in fines and personal liability for accident-related costs.
