The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of unsettled conditions across the state till April 3.
In a press release issued on March 31, the NSDMA stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph are likely to occur at isolated to scattered locations.
According to the advisory, districts including Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Tuensang, Kiphire, Mokokchung, Longleng and Phek may experience thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds, particularly on April 1. Similar conditions are also expected in Chümoukedima, Mon, Niuland and Tseminyu during the forecast period.
The authority cautioned that heavy rainfall and strong winds could lead to poor visibility, waterlogging, uprooting of trees, damage to vulnerable structures and disruption of power and communication lines. It also warned of possible landslides in vulnerable areas and risks posed by lightning to people and livestock in open spaces.
Further, the NSDMA noted that standing crops and horticultural produce may be affected. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard crops, livestock and related infrastructure.
“The NSDMA advises the public to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions during thunderstorms and lightning activities,” the release stated.
It urged citizens to avoid sheltering under trees and near electric poles, stay indoors during thunderstorms, secure loose structures and avoid travel during intense rainfall. For real time updates, the public has been encouraged to download and use the Safer Nagaland App.
