Kohima, May 21 (MTNews): Gauhati High Court Judge and Executive Chairman, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, Justice Songkhupchung Serto said today that 99% of the cases in High Court were against the government observing that bureaucrats commit mistakes because of the lack of knowledge on the law. He was addressing the students of Kohima Law College, Kohima during an interaction program today in the college premises.
The Judge lamented that legislators were not introducing new laws and added that minor changes to the laws were made only during emergencies or when situations arose. While stating that the government is governed by the law, Serto opined that “If all the administrators, bureaucrats and legislators study law for three years, they will become better at their profession” adding that law is dynamic, needs continuous growth and is subject to change to feed the needs of the society.
The judge opined law as the ‘science of life’ elaborating that it gives a person the way to live, to differentiate between right and wrong, one’s duties towards others and society and others’ duties towards us.
He also pondered how law graduates in the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Nerhu or BR Ambedkar etc made important contributions to the law of the country adding that they were conscience keepers of the nation.
Therefore, he said, law was a subject everybody or anybody should study. As for the students, he said law as a career option was limitless and called them to explore beyond getting stuck with senior advocates or becoming law graduates.
The program was chaired by Assistant Professor Kezhokhoto Savi and Gauhati High Court Registrar, Neiko Akami. Joint Registrar, Atoka Achumi also spoke during the program.
