The NTPRADAO (PJ) has criticised MLA and Naga People’s Front (NPF) Secretary General Achumbemo Kikon over remarks made on the floor of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on March 26, concerning the role of Gaonburahs (GBs).
In a statement, the organisation said the remarks portrayed Gaonburahs as “mere government appointees and ineffective,” a characterisation it disagreed with. It maintained that GBs have historically played a significant role in the administrative and social structure of Naga villages.
The organisation noted that the institution of Gaonburahs has been integral to local governance, linking traditional systems with formal administrative processes. It also highlighted the contributions of GBs to community welfare and their involvement in various phases of Naga political developments.
NTPRADAO (PJ) urged the MLA to exercise restraint in public statements and called for greater recognition of the role played by Gaonburahs in society.
The organisation also expressed reservations over the involvement of the Global Naga Forum in the matter, stating thay they have “blatantly failed to assess and understand the root causes and public sentiment prevailing in Nagaland”.
