Fresh tensions have reportedly surfaced along the Assam–Nagaland border following the installation of a signboard bearing the name of a Nagaland village at Dimorujan village under the Uriamghat area in Assam’s Golaghat district.
According to reports published in The Assam Tribune, the signboard identified the locality as “Wochan Village” and carried the address of a district in Nagaland.
The development has triggered reactions from local organisations in the Uriamghat region, with some groups alleging attempts to assert territorial presence in the area.
Phase-I Dhansiri Sub Division Students’ Union president Bikash Bora reportedly said the organisation had opposed the development and appealed to the local administration to take appropriate action.
According to the report, local residents alleged that a shop had recently been opened in the area by Naga residents and that some evicted families had been allowed to return to the locality. The student body further urged authorities to continue eviction drives in areas where eviction processes remain pending.
The Assam Tribune report also noted that concerns over alleged encroachment and settlement activities have remained a recurring source of tension in parts of the Assam–Nagaland border region, including stretches around Disoi, Disoi Valley and Tiru Hills.
No official statement from Nagaland authorities or village representatives from the Nagaland side was available at the time of filing this report.
Border areas between Assam and Nagaland have witnessed periodic tensions over land claims, settlement activities and administrative jurisdiction for decades, with both states maintaining differing positions over several disputed stretches.
