The Dimapur Sümi Council (DSC) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault of two minor girls in separate incidents in Dimapur and demanded fast-track trials and exemplary punishment for the accused.
In a statement issued on June 14, the DSC expressed shock and outrage over the incidents, describing them as “heinous” crimes against vulnerable children and an assault on humanity.
The council referred to two cases reported by the police earlier this month. In the first case, a 33-year-old labourer from Old Showuba, identified as Sadam Hussain, was arrested on June 6 for the alleged sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl. In the second case, a 32-year-old resident of Ekranipathar Gaon Bura Colony, identified as Raiz Uddin, was arrested on June 3 for the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old minor.
The DSC said the incidents had raised serious concerns about the safety of children within the community and noted that such crimes leave lasting psychological and physical trauma on victims and their families.
While appreciating the Nagaland Police for apprehending the accused, the council called for the cases to be fast-tracked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. It also sought the strictest punishment permissible under the law and urged that no legal leniency be extended to the accused.
The council further appealed to the concerned authorities and welfare departments to ensure comprehensive medical, psychological and legal support to the victims and their families.
The DSC commended the Dimapur Police and the Women Police Station for their prompt action in registering the cases and making the arrests. However, it said that securing justice would require continued efforts beyond the arrests and called on the community to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in addressing crimes against children.
Stating that it stands in solidarity with the victims and their families, the council said it would closely monitor the progress of the cases until justice is served.
