The Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) has criticized the United Naga Council (UNC) and its alleged associates over the release of 14 Kuki detainees from the custody of Naga Village Guards on June 9, demanding that the organizations involved issue an apology.

In a statement issued on June 13, the Ministry of Shenta, FGN, accused the UNC of acting at the behest of the NSCN (IM) and in collusion with the Naga People’s Front (NPF) for several decades. It alleged that the release of the detainees was carried out under the influence of “one faction and two top ministers of the enemy country,” while ignoring the plight of six Nagas who were reportedly abducted by Kuki militants on May 13, 2026.

According to the statement, the release was undertaken “without the knowledge of the six victim’s families, Zeliangrong communities and other relevant CSOs,” and has created “various problems in our land.”

The Ministry further accused the UNC, the Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) of Senapati, and certain civil society organizations of acting against the interests of the Naga people. It claimed that the UNC, originally established to safeguard the rights and ancestral lands of the southern Nagas, had instead “favoured the Kuki terrorists” and acted contrary to its founding objectives.

“The southern Naga people have every right to remove UNC at any time as the people are supreme in democracy,” the statement asserted, while also suggesting that the organization should dissolve itself on moral grounds if it continues such actions.

Calling on Nagas to remain united, the FGN stated that the Naga people should “stand united and resist the evil forces without fear,” adding that democratic Naga people and “true Naga national workers” would continue to support the public.
