The Akehta Sangtamlarü Thsingmüjang (AST) has expressed “profound shock, outrage and deep disturbance” over the alleged rape of an 82-year-old woman in Kiphire on June 16, calling it a “horrifying and barbaric” crime and demanding strict action against the accused.
In a statement, AST strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a gross violation of human dignity and an assault on society’s moral conscience. The organisation also noted with concern that the accused, identified as Heluikie Nsanglung of the Zeliang community, is reportedly an Armed Branch Constable, saying the involvement of a law enforcement personnel “entrusted with protecting the vulnerable has instead betrayed his oath, brought shame upon the uniform, and shattered public trust.”
AST asserted that “No rank, uniform, or position will serve as a shield against accountability.”
The organisation put forward a series of demands, including immediately release of the picture of the accused to the public, immediate suspension and dismissal from service, denial of bail, and a fast-track trial ensuring the maximum punishment prescribed under the law upon conviction. It also called for a transparent and impartial investigation free from external interference or influence.
Further, AST sought comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support for the survivor.
AST warned that leniency in the case would send a dangerous message that perpetrators can evade accountability through power or position, adding, “We will not tolerate such a precedent.”
The organisation also expressed solidarity with the survivor and her family. It added that it remains committed to supporting the survivor and her family until justice is fully served, and called on law enforcement, the judiciary, civil society, and citizens to ensure the case is pursued with the absolute seriousness it demands.
