The Sumi Community of New Ministers’ Hill (SCNMH), Kohima, celebrated the Tuluni festival with a vibrant cultural programme at the official residence of Principal Secretary and Development Commissioner Y. Kikheto Sema, who hosted the event and called on the younger generation to embrace agriculture, hard work and unity.

Addressing the gathering, Sema said Tuluni is one of the most significant festivals of the Sumi community, rooted in agriculture and observed as a thanksgiving celebration after months of hard work in the fields. He said the festival symbolises gratitude, abundance, unity and fellowship, strengthening family and community bonds through the sharing of meals and prayers for peace and prosperity.
“The true spirit of Tuluni lies in the value of hard work,” Sema said, urging young people to return to their agricultural roots. He noted that Nagaland is blessed with diverse agro-climatic conditions where almost any crop can thrive if people are willing to work diligently.
Drawing from the biblical account of the Israelites entering the Promised Land, he said faith, determination and hard work transformed the land into a prosperous nation. In contrast, he observed that despite Nagaland’s fertile land, the lack of unity and a strong work culture has slowed the state’s progress. “Our land is fertile, but our minds have become like barren land,” he remarked, calling on Nagas, particularly the Sumi community, to cultivate a stronger work ethic and spirit of unity.
Sema also urged members of the Sumi community living in Kohima to serve as ambassadors of peace and harmony among all tribes. He thanked the Angami community for fostering peaceful coexistence in the state capital and encouraged everyone to continue strengthening inter-community friendship and unity.
The celebration featured traditional cultural performances, including Athi Sheküsü Le, Itsa, Ami Küküla, Lejole and Aphilo Kuwo. Advisor of SCNMH Toniho Sheqhi also presented the Tuluni Ghili, highlighting the cultural significance and essence of the festival.
