A delegation of the Kamrup Metropolitan Zila Sahitya Sabha, Assam, led by its president Prafulla Barman, called on Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio at Sovima village, Chümoukedima, on July 27.
The delegation apprised Rio of its visit, aimed at supporting the revival and strengthening of the Kohima Sahitya Sabha and fostering long-term literary and cultural ties between Assam and Nagaland.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the historical significance of the Kohima Sahitya Sabha. It was noted that Reverend Sahitya Charyya Padmanath Gohain Baruah, the founding president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, established the Kohima Sahitya Sabha in 1895 while serving as a teacher in Kohima.
The institution is recognised as the first office of the Assam Sahitya Sabha and remains a symbol of the goodwill, mutual respect and cultural affinity shared by the people of Assam and Nagaland. It also stands as a testimony to the region’s shared literary heritage.
Rio welcomed the delegation and appreciated its initiative to strengthen the longstanding literary and cultural relationship between the two states. Reaffirming the importance of preserving the shared legacy, he assured the delegation that the State Government would extend full support for the revival and development of the Kohima Sahitya Sabha.
The Chief Minister also assured that appropriate steps would be taken to facilitate the proposed initiatives and expressed his commitment to promoting stronger friendship and sustained literary and cultural exchanges between Assam and Nagaland.
According to Teisovikuolie Therie, Deputy Director, Art & Culture Department, Nagaland, the visit marks an important step towards deepening inter-state cultural collaboration and honouring the shared literary history of the region.
