MP Jamir urges reflection on ancestral values and collective progress
The spirit of thanksgiving, cultural pride and community unity marked the celebration of Tsüngremmung Festival 2026 across Mokokchung district on Saturday, with the Ao community gathering to honour the traditional pre-harvest festival.
The main celebration organised by Ao Senden was held at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, with Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir as the guest of honour. The festival was observed under the theme “Sobaliba Washimung”.
Addressing the gathering, Jamir said Tsüngremmung was not merely a social celebration but a sacred occasion rooted in gratitude towards God and the land that sustains life. Recalling the traditional account of Tsüngremsang and Merangsang, he said the ancestors observed the festival with humility and shared their blessings without division.
Jamir stressed that Tsüngremmung should not be reduced to a mere occasion of celebration, but should remain a time for prayer, reflection and renewal of traditional values. He urged the community to uphold the spiritual essence of the festival and seek blessings for individuals, society and future generations.
Speaking on leadership and governance, the MP called upon people to support the Clean Election initiative of the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM), saying it aimed to promote honest and responsible leadership. He said the responsibility of electing capable leaders rested with the people and called for greater voter awareness.
Jamir also urged the community to introspect on issues affecting development in Mokokchung and work collectively towards progress instead of placing blame elsewhere.
Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma highlighted the role of Tsüngremmung in preserving Ao cultural heritage and strengthening social bonds. He encouraged the youth to remain connected to their traditions while embracing education, discipline and public service.
Verma also acknowledged the challenges faced by families affected by recent floods and landslides in parts of the district, including Tuli, and assured continued support from the district administration.
Ao Senden president Marsanen Imsong delivered the welcome address, while Khensa Village Council chairman I.Alemmeren Longchar spoke on the significance of Tsüngremmung. Mokokchung Municipal Council chairman Imkongchuba A also extended festival greetings.
The celebration featured cultural performances by Watsü Mungdang, Ao Lanur Telongjem and Watemdong Cultural Club, Ungma. The semifinals and final rounds of the Tsüngremmung inter-ward tug-of-war competition was also held, with Alempang Ward defeating Salangtem Ward to emerge champions.
