Mon, Mokokchung, Longleng and Tuensang present district-level assessments
An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) reviewed Nagaland’s monsoon-related damage and relief requirements during a briefing at Noune Resort, Chümoukedima, on August 11, with four District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) presenting district-level assessments.
The DDMAs of Mon, Mokokchung, Longleng and Tuensang made presentations on the disaster situation and preparedness measures in their respective districts before the central team. The Water Resources Department also presented an assessment, followed by an interaction with the IMCT.
The briefing was part of the central team’s assessment of the damage and requirements arising from the ongoing monsoon in Nagaland.
Advisor, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Z. Nyusiethio Nyuthe, said the State had witnessed severe and recurring flood events since July 19, with another major spell reported on August 3.
He highlighted the State’s geographical and climatic vulnerability, noting that Nagaland’s hilly terrain and variable rainfall made several areas particularly susceptible to isolation during periods of heavy rainfall.
Nyuthe said several districts and pockets had remained cut off for more than a week due to damage to roads and difficult terrain, with some areas requiring aerial supply of essential food items and relief materials.
He said the State had also witnessed significant loss of lives during the monsoon, with 11 lives lost in one district, describing it as an unprecedented tragedy for Nagaland.
Nyuthe acknowledged the coordinated response of the State and Union governments, including the constitution of IMCTs to assess damage and requirements.
He expressed hope that the ongoing field assessments would help convey the extent of the damage and suffering and facilitate further assistance for relief and recovery.
An overview of the disaster situation during the 2026 monsoon was presented by Dr Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA.
- Ramachandrudu, IAS, Joint Secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs, delivered remarks on behalf of the IMCT.
The central team comprised Ramachandrudu; Sanjeev Kumar Suman, Director; Pankaj Pahadia, Deputy Director (FCD); Pradeep Kumar Meena, Executive Engineer; Rajeshwari S. Mallegeowda, Director (DoRD); and Priyom Roy, Scientist ‘SF’.
The briefing was chaired by Jonjibemo Odyuo, Assistant Manager (Relief, Recovery & Mitigation), NSDMA, while Sentiwapang Aier, Secretary, NSDMA, delivered the welcome address.
