North East Christian University (NECU), through its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised a talk on cyber security awareness on October 30 to sensitise students and faculty to cybercrime and its consequences.

NECU holds cyber security

Kihika Chishi, NPS, officer-in-charge of the Cyber Crime Police Station, Kohima, spoke on various forms of cybercrime, highlighting how scammers exploit emotions such as fear and trust through social media, banking and messaging platforms.

He said 80-85% of cybercrime cases reported in Nagaland originated from Dimapur and Kohima, including financial fraud, account hacking, investment scams, digital arrest scams, sextortion and impersonation. He noted that both educated and uneducated people fall victim due to inadequate awareness, panic, greed and failure to verify information.

Chishi advised participants against clicking unverified links or sharing one-time passwords and other credentials. He urged victims to report incidents promptly through the cybercrime helpline 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, www.cybercrime.gov.in.

He also outlined investigative challenges, relevant provisions of the IT Act and measures taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs to combat cybercrime.

The programme concluded with an interactive session. Dr. Vareching Valui chaired the event, Er. Kapil Thapa delivered the welcome address, and Dr. Chibenthung Yanthan proposed the vote of thanks.
