‘Every blood donor is a life saver’ the saying goes and today, we take the opportunity to celebrate the unsung heroes of Mokokchung who has been saving lives in silence.
As Mokokchung District Voluntary Blood Donors Association (MDVBDA) gear up to celebrate World Blood Donors Day on the 14th of this month, here is a peek into the association and their humanitarian deeds.
The ”Mokokchung District Voluntary Blood Donors Association” (MDVBDA) was formed in the year 2011 when 9 (nine) like-minded friends came together with the understanding that human blood was unique and precious, with an aim to sensitize and motivate the people while at the same time, hoping to encourage people to come forward for voluntary blood donation so that safe and adequate blood availability would be possible for the needy.
The team then collectively nominated Mr. Molo Jamir as the President and Mr. Akumnungsang as the Secretary and Dr. Chubala Aier Chief Medical Officer, Mokokchung, the then Sr. M.O. of Blood Bank IMDH (now Blood Center IMDH) as the Advisor.
Over the time, Mr. Molo Jamir remained as President while Mr. Makshi Jamir became the Secretary and Dr. Chubala Aier CMO Mokokchung remained the Advisor of the MDVBDA.
Dr. H. Tsipongchem Sangtam, Pathologist & M.O. Blood Center IMDH along with his diligent Technicians of the Blood Center work tirelessly to cater to the needy patients at any given time.
Currently, the Blood Center at IMDH has the capacity to store 320 units of blood at a time but the present blood transfusion rate in Mokokchung District is only around 100 to 150 units in a month approximately. The MDVBDA also informed that hardly an average of 100 units could be collected voluntarily in Mokokchung.
The MDVBDA in collaboration with Blood Center IMDH and Red Ribbon Club of different Colleges in Mokokchung have been conducting active sensitization and awareness programs and voluntary blood donation camp at least once in a month with different groups of people but despite the rigorous efforts, it has been reported that the amount needed could not be met from safe and voluntary blood donations.
“Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives” is the theme for this year’s World Blood Donor’s Day.
According to MDVBDA, the theme signifies the fact that despite having certain limitations there are still many people with humanitarian souls in Mokokchung who have been voluntarily coming forward and donating their precious blood and saving lives.
Taking this into account, the Mokokchung District Voluntary Blood Donors Association together with the citizens of Mokokchung acknowledges and celebrates each and every Voluntary Blood Donor across Mokokchung and would like to show appreciation to those voluntary blood donors who have donated 10 times or more:
