Jorhat is in Assam, but for Mokokchung, the city has long been much more than a place across the state boundary. Located about 100 kilometres from the Mokokchung district headquarters, Jorhat is the nearest major commercial centre and an important economic and service hub for Mokokchung and much of northern Nagaland.
Its importance extends beyond Nagaland. Jorhat serves as a major commercial centre for Upper Assam and has emerged as one of the prominent and rapidly growing cities of Northeast India. Its railway and air connectivity, industries, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and growing corporate presence make it a natural destination for people from neighbouring areas. For Mokokchung, therefore, a stronger relationship with Jorhat is not simply desirable but practical.
There are also historical ties between the people of Mokokchung and Jorhat that predate the modern state boundaries. Trade, travel, education and everyday interaction have connected the two places for generations. The border may separate Assam and Nagaland administratively, but geography and history have long connected Jorhat closely with the social and economic life of Mokokchung.
It is in this context that the institutional partnership between FAC College, Mokokchung, and CKB Commerce College, Jorhat, should be viewed. The recently signed MoU and the cultural exchange programme held at FAC College on August 29 are encouraging steps in the right direction. What has begun as a collaboration between two colleges, with plans for academic exchanges, student and faculty exchanges, seminars, conferences and joint research, has the potential to create benefits well beyond their campuses.
The timing is particularly appropriate for FAC College as it prepares to introduce the commerce stream. A partnership with an established commerce institution in Jorhat can provide opportunities for academic exposure, knowledge sharing and institutional learning. Students can benefit from interaction with peers and faculty across the state boundary, while both institutions can gain from sharing resources, experiences and expertise.
More importantly, such collaborations can help rebuild and deepen connections that geography has already made natural. Stronger educational ties can eventually lead to wider cooperation in business, entrepreneurship, employment, tourism and other areas.
Mokokchung has little to lose by strengthening its relationship with Jorhat. On the contrary, it stands to gain from closer engagement with a city that is geographically near, economically significant and historically connected to it.
The FAC-CKB collaboration is therefore more than an institutional agreement. It is a small but meaningful bridge between two neighbouring communities. It deserves to be encouraged, expanded and, most importantly, followed by many more such initiatives.
