With incessant rains recently transforming the field into an unplayable mess, matches in the ongoing MDFA Trophy tournament resemble epic struggles against nature itself. As players struggle to battle through puddles, one might even wonder if we’ve accidentally invented a new sport—mudball. Some of the recently invented sports include quirky games like ‘Hantis,’ played with four tables and a ball, and ‘360Ball,’ which is played on a circular court with rackets. Perhaps we can add ‘mudball’ to the list! If ‘Breaking’ can make it to the Paris 2024 Olympics, perhaps mudball isn’t too far-fetched.
The Imkongmeren Sports Complex is now arguably the worst football ground in Nagaland. Many attempts have been made to address the maintenance issues, but genuine progress seems elusive. If the residents of Mokokchung truly care about the state of this facility, a more proactive approach is needed. A united effort to establish a team dedicated to investigating the ground’s poor condition could pave the way for meaningful change. This team should analyze the historical context, envision a path forward, and craft a realistic proposal for improvement.
Playgrounds are the lungs of a community, vital for promoting health and social cohesion. While other grounds exist on the outskirts, the central location of Imkongmeren makes it uniquely important for the people of Mokokchung. It serves as a hub where sports and recreation can thrive, and its accessibility is invaluable.
Improving the condition of the Imkongmeren Sports Complex may take time, but the journey must start with the community’s commitment.
