The life of Dr. S.C. Jamir stands as a remarkable testimony to courage, perseverance, public service and above all, the sustaining grace of God. The story is traced back to 1876, when Wabong Jungshinokdang, a respected citizen of Ungma Village and the grandfather of Dr. S.C. Jamir welcomed Dr. E.W. Clark and the Assamese Evangelist Godhula, who were among the early Christian missionaries to the Naga Hills, into his home and extended to them his friendship and hospitality. During their visit, Dr. E. W. Clark prayed for Wabong Jungshinokdang and his family and blessed them before departing. That simple act of hospitality and fellowship has since come to be remembered as part of a larger legacy, through which the blessings and providence of God are believed to have extended to his grandson.
Throughout his long public life, Dr. S.C. Jamir has faced moments of grave danger. There were four documented occasions when attempts were made on his life:
- 19 February 1990 – Upper Agri Colony, Kohima
- 19 November 1992 – Nagaland House, New Delhi
- 29 November 1999 – NH-39, Pherima/Piphema
- 24 November 2007 – In the vicinity of Changki Village
His survival of these perilous incidents and his continued long and active life remind us of our faith in a powerful and protective God who watches over and preserves those under His care. Dr. S.C. Jamir’s life and public service have also been a source of considerable pride for the Ao Nagas. His fearless spirit, courage and leadership have enabled the Ao community to hold its place with dignity and pride among the various Naga tribes.
We therefore acknowledge his life with profound respect and gratitude. We thank and praise God for preserving the life of such a distinguished leader and citizen, and for granting him continued strength, good health and longevity. As we look forward to this significant milestone, let us join together in prayer that, by the grace of God, our respected leader will be blessed to celebrate his 100th birthday on 17 October 2031 in good health, strength and happiness.
May his life continue to stand as a testimony to faith, courage, perseverance and God’s unfailing grace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
