The Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM) has expressed deep sorrow and strongly condemned the killing of Imrongsungba Imchen of Longkhum village in the run-up to the by-election in the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency on April 5, terming it a grave violation of the election code of conduct and “an inhumane outrage against humanity.”

In a statement issued by its Executive Secretary, Rev. Temsü Jamir, ABAM said by-elections are a cornerstone of democracy that allow citizens to freely choose their leaders, and warned that any attempt to disrupt the process through violence undermines the very foundation of democratic values. “A leader elected through fear and bloodshed cannot be considered legitimate,” the church body stated.

ABAM said it had earlier cautioned all concerned against resorting to violence and reminded stakeholders of the serious moral and social consequences of such actions, but noted with regret that “our people have once again failed to adhere to the Election Code of Conduct.” Expressing remorse, it said it earnestly prayed for God’s mercy upon the land and its people.

Extending condolences to the bereaved family, ABAM said, “Their loss is profound, and we share in their grief,” and prayed that the family would find strength and comfort in the solidarity of the community and in the assurance that justice would be pursued.

ABAM also expressed confidence that authorities would ensure justice is delivered “swiftly and fairly,” while urging law enforcement agencies to maintain strict vigilance to prevent further untoward incidents and uphold peace and security across the constituency.

Calling on political parties and candidates to uphold peace, fairness, and respect for human life, ABAM urged them to refrain from actions that incite violence. It also appealed to citizens to condemn the act and shun violence in all its forms. “Refrain violence and stand firm for a clean, peaceful, and democratic election,” it stated.

Reiterating that democracy thrives only when elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, fairness, and respect for human dignity, ABAM stressed that violence has no place in the electoral process.

It concluded with a prayer for divine protection and peace in the constituency, expressing hope that the by-election would be conducted in fairness and harmony. “May the citizens be led to elect the leader whom God has chosen, so that justice, dignity, and true democracy may flourish,” it prayed.
