What is it?

Meningococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis.

It can cause:

  • Meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord)
  • Septicemia (blood infection)

How does it spread?

  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Sharing utensils, water bottles etc.
  • Close and prolonged contact, especially in hostels and dormitories
  • Close living in crowded conditions

Watch for these symptoms:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Drowsiness or confusion
  • Seizures
  • Reddish-purple rash that does not fade when pressed
  • Cold hands and feet or signs of shock (in severe cases)

Any person with these symptoms should be referred immediately to the nearest health facility

Prevention:

  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Wash hands regularly
  • Avoid sharing personal items
  • Keep rooms well ventilated
  • Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms develop
