Film to hit theatres on September 18, with Fun Cinemas in Dimapur among its planned venues

After a long journey marked by repeated postponements, Nawmai: The Wancho Warrior is finally set to reach the big screen on September 18, 2026.

Directed by Jovi Wangsa, the film was initiated in 2017 and had earlier been scheduled for theatrical release in 2024. However, the release did not materialise, with financial constraints among the challenges faced by the production.

The film is now being lined up for a theatrical release in theatres across the Northeast, Wangsa told MT.

The makers are also looking at a wider theatrical reach. A Hindi version is also being considered.

Wangsa described Nawmai: The Wancho Warrior as a purely commercial film, drawing inspiration from mainstream Bollywood-style cinema rather than an art film or a production intended to be deeply culturally rooted.

The film centres on a traditional warrior narrative associated with the Wancho community and is being positioned as a commercial war drama for a wider Northeast audience.
