The age-old trade route connecting Mekokla village in Wokha district and Changki village in Mokokchung district was officially reopened on June 5, after being unused for more than four decades. The historic Mekokla-Changki Link Road was inaugurated by MLA Achumbemo Kikon in a ceremony that also commemorated World Environment Day 2025 under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.”

Addressing the gathering at Dümakvü, MLA Kikon recalled the road’s deep-rooted importance, saying it “used to be an important trade route for the Lothas and the Aos of the area, when the forefathers traded amongst themselves goods for daily needs, partly through cash and partly through the barter system.” He reflected on how the route “helped them maintain economic well-being and a sense of brotherhood.”

Speaking on the significance of restoring the road, Kikon added, “The restoration and re-activation of the same road which has been left unused for more than forty years will help strengthen ties and foster better relation among the villagers for a common progress.”

MLA Kikon expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Advisors Mhathung Yanthan and Temjenmenba, “for their instrumental support in reviving and making the historic link road operational again.”

The World Environment Day celebration at Mekokla also featured speeches by Additional Deputy Commissioner Bhandari, Longasen Lotha NCS, officers from the Forest Department, and Village Council Chairmen from both Changki and Mekokla villages. The program drew public leaders, government officials, and villagers from both districts, emphasizing a shared commitment toward environmental preservation.
