In the wake of a tragic incident involving the untimely demise of two youths from Assam on the Mon-Naginimora road in Mon district, suspected to be from a truck accident, representatives from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) hailing from Mon District, Nagaland, and Charaideo District, Assam, convened on 29 September 2023 at the Konyak Union Office, Tizit Unit.

The meeting was organized as proposed by the Konyak Union, Headquarters – Mon, with the aim of fostering peace, unity, and strengthening the relationship between the Ahom/Assamese people and Konyak Naga people.

With shared aspirations, they resolved that if the forensic report confirms that the unfortunate incident/accident in Angjangyang, Mon district on 23 September 2023, where one driver and a handyman from Charaideo, Assam, lost their lives, is the result of foul play, both the CSOs shall pressurize the district administration and Police for a prompt investigation to apprehend the culprit(s) at the earliest.

Another significant outcome of the meeting was the establishment of an agreement that any matters or incidents occurring on either side shall be communicated first to the corresponding Civil Society Organization before any independent actions are taken. This commitment to transparent communication is designed to facilitate the timely and amicable resolution of any issues that may arise.

Moreover, they resolved that any incidents or crimes on either side shall not be treated as “communal issues.” Instead, they commit to working collaboratively to address such matters through legal means, adhering to the provisions of the law, ensuring that justice prevails, and that conflicts are resolved in a “fair and unbiased manner.”

Recognizing the importance of maintaining regular communication and coordination between the organizations, the CSOs resolved that they will hold periodic coordination meetings as and when required to serve as platforms for discussing emerging issues, sharing information, and strengthening their partnership.

They further decided that additional resolutions and action points shall be discussed and mutually agreed upon in subsequent meetings where a Joint Action Committee shall be formed to ensure the continued progress of their collaborative efforts in promoting peace, unity, and harmonious relations between the communities. The date for the next meeting has been set for 10 October 2023.
