The Association of Indigenous Minority Tribes of Nagaland (AIMTN) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the “bias exclusion of indigenous Garo, Kuki, Kachari and Mikir tribes of Nagaland” in the recently advertised district-wise allotment of constable posts in the Nagaland Police Department.
In a press statement, the AIMTN noted that “these four tribes are constitutionally recognized by the Government of India as Scheduled Tribes in the state of Nagaland vide THE CONSTITUTION (NAGALAND) SCHEDULED TRIBES ORDER 1970.”
The association further pointed out that the Government of Nagaland’s Home Department Order No. APPT-18/6/67 dated Kohima, the 6th July, 1973 “clearly states that ‘…the Governor of Nagaland has been pleased to make provision for the reservation of 100% for appointment to non-technical Grade III & IV posts and 80% of all the other appointments or posts under the Government that are to be filled in by direct recruitment for persons belonging to the tribes mentioned below:-
1. Any Naga tribes
2. Kuki
3. Kachari
4. Garo
5. Mikir
Provided such persons are indigenous inhabitants of state of Nagaland.’”
Despite these constitutional and administrative provisions, the AIMTN stated that “the Government of Nagaland, Office of the Director General of Police Order No.PHQ (B-1) 1/Recruitment/Constables/2023/ Dated, Kohima the 30th September 2025 has most ambiguously ignored these tribes thus violating of the above mentioned orders.”
“In the light of the above, the AIMTN fervently appeal to the authority concerned to review the said Order and judiciously allot seats to these tribes under Dimapur /Peren/Chümoukedima districts,” the statement added.
