As part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” global campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day this year, the staff of Akashvani Station Kohima participated in planting trees at the office premises in honor of their mothers.
The campaign for Akashvani stations in the state was launched at Akashvani Kohima by the Cluster Head of Kohima and Deputy Director General (Engineering), KK Rengma, who planted a sapling at the office.

Rengma encouraged the staff to plant at least one sapling each, whether at the office or at their residences. He expressed optimism that this campaign would inspire people across the country to contribute to the preservation of Mother Earth.
Programme Executive, Ella Kayina said that Akashvani stations in the state would continue the campaign until March 2025. She also informed that Nagaland has been given a target of planting 35 lakh trees and shared an update from the State Forest Department, reporting that about 28 lakh trees have already been planted in the state.

Kayina noted that the saplings were procured at a minimal rate from the Department of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Nagaland. She added that the office had so far planted ornamental, flowering, and fruit-bearing trees.

Range Forest Officer, Kohima, Medolezo Kire, also attended the event and planted a sapling. He expressed delight at the initiative undertaken by Akashvani Kohima.

A total of 24 saplings, including trees and ornamental plants, were planted at the office premises today.

Akashvani Kohima has scheduled specific days for the plantation drive involving all employees posted at Dimapur, High Power Transmitter Zubza, the local radio station at Mokokchung, and Community Radio Stations at Mon, Tuensang, Phek, Wokha, and Zunheboto, including staff quarters.

Akashvani stations and offices at 299 locations across the country are actively participating in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign.

It may be mentioned that “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (Plant for Mother) is a campaign to plant trees in memory of, or in honor of, one’s mother. The campaign aims to halt and reverse land degradation, build drought resistance, and prevent desertification. The goal is to plant 80 crore trees by September 2024 and 140 crore trees by March 2025, engaging all stakeholders across society.

On 30 June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his happiness over the participation of all sections of society in the campaign during his “Mann Ki Baat” address, and he exhorted everyone to take part in the initiative.
