The Asetkong Kaketshir Telongjem Mungdang (AKTM) observed World Environment Day on Saturday at Longpa village as part of its ‘Greening Asetkong’ project under the theme ‘Only One Earth.’ The village council chairman of Longpa, I. Nungsang Aier, in his speech said that every individual should participate to preserve and conserve the environment.
AKTM president LanulembaLongchar while speaking at the event said that farmers have a great role to play in order to save the environment and suggested that they should plant trees in their fields before sowing seeds to mitigate the effects of shifting cultivation. He also suggested that farms should not only be for cash crops and encouraged farmers to plant fruit bearing trees to nourish both humans and wild animals to help maintain ecological balance.
The AKTM president said, “We only care for ourselves and destroy our nature as we forget where we are living in and if we continue to do the same i.e deforestation, pollution, use of plastic, excessive use of resources etc., then we will leave nothing for the generations to come. Therefore, the Student unions, Village Councils and various organizations should come together to protect, conserve, preserve and sustain our environment.”
Greening Asetkong is a project initiated and hosted by Dr. Imtiwapang Aier MLA (23 Impur Constituency) since 2016 till date.
