MTNews Desk | 22 December: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has emphasized the need for a comprehensive survey along the India-Myanmar border, particularly in the states of Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur. Speaking at the 12th meeting of the Northeastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) Society in Agartala, Tripura, Shah underscored the importance of mapping demographic data in these regions to aid border fencing efforts and curb infiltration.
Shah also highlighted the necessity of extensive mapping for mineral, oil, and coal reserves in the Northeastern states. He noted that such initiatives would financially benefit the states through royalties from these resources.
In a related development, the Manipur government announced on Wednesday that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has reimposed the Protected Area Regime in Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland, citing growing security concerns due to the influx of people from neighboring countries.
Meanwhile, a separate incident on December 19 saw protests disrupt the inauguration of the International Border Fencing Project at Point 156, led by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) and General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF). Villagers from Longwa in Mon district objected to the project, leading to intervention by the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) and members of the Konyak Union. Local authorities assured villagers that the issue would be addressed as a local matter, not an international one, with further discussions to follow. This was reported by a Facebook Page, TCL Morning Post.
