An advocacy program in observance of Anti-Malaria Month was held at the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) Conference Hall in Mokokchung on Tuesday under the theme ”Test, Treat, Track.”
Delivering the keynote address, Chief Medical Officer of Mokokchung, Dr Sentizungla Marina Yaden, said the theme, introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010, is “a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to achieve universal coverage with diagnosis, testing, and effective anti-malarial treatment, while continuously strengthening the surveillance system.”
Dr Yaden emphasized the importance of robust surveillance and testing, stating that it “allows early detection and timely treatment for malaria, and ensures the judicious use of anti-malarial drugs—minimizing the chance of resistance.” She called on all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to the “Test, Treat, Track” strategy as India aims for zero indigenous malaria cases by 2027 and complete elimination by 2030.
A presentation on malaria in Mokokchung district was made by Dr Martula Lemtur, District Program Officer (DPO), CD-I. Through a PowerPoint presentation, she provided insights into vector-borne diseases, their prevention, treatment, and statistical data based on district-level surveillance and reporting. Dr. Lemtur also outlined initiatives undertaken locally under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP) to prevent malaria.
Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, in his address, acknowledged the importance of observing Anti-Malaria Month alongside the rest of the country as “a means to educate, prevent, and eradicate malaria.” He commended the district’s NVBDCP team for their efforts in detection, treatment, and timely interventions against vector-borne diseases.
Calling for broader community engagement, Verma urged community leaders and stakeholders to actively support the mission to eliminate malaria. “The department is working day and night with its systems, guidelines, and awareness initiatives,” he said, “but until and unless there is support from the community and stakeholders, the vision cannot be achieved.”
