In his address to the students, Jamir highlighted the close relationship between culture and education, stating that both work hand in hand and should be pursued together for personal growth. He emphasized the importance of preserving one’s culture, urging the attendees to remain connected to their ancestral roots by using their talents to benefit their community. Jamir also stressed the importance of practicing the exogamous marriage system of the Ao tribe and understanding the significance of the mother tongue as a marker of identity. He further encouraged the students to embody the values of hard work and truthfulness, qualities upheld by their ancestors, which had brought prosperity to their community.

Jamir acknowledged that while culture evolves with time, it remains a vital aspect of any community, providing valuable lessons for future generations. Turning to the subject of education, he noted that while Nagaland offers many job opportunities, many educated youths remain unemployed because they tend to pursue only government jobs. He urged parents and students alike to adopt a more flexible mindset and explore various career paths. Jamir encouraged students to assess their interests and potential when choosing a profession and to be prepared to work hard, overcome challenges, and step outside their comfort zones to lead in the future.

T Chubayanger, President of the Kohima Ao Telongjem, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of the mother tongue in defining culture and identity. He observed that many youths today view language merely as a tool for communication and often overlook its deeper significance. He argued that without a strong connection to their mother tongue, individuals risk losing their cultural identity and becoming disconnected from their community. Chubayanger urged everyone to prioritize the preservation and promotion of their native language.

He further pointed out that many people blame external systems for their dissatisfaction, but stressed the importance of self-reflection. By shifting one’s perspective and vision, Chubayanger noted, individuals can discover their inner potential and achieve the goals they aspire to.

During the event, eight students from Kohima who excelled in the 2024 HSLC and HSSLC Examinations were honored with the AKTK Meritorious Award. The day’s program also included traditional Ao folksongs, folk dances, and a special musical performance.

The event began with a welcome address by AKTK President Sentilong Longchar, and the vote of thanks was delivered by General Secretary Moasunep, concluding a celebration that showcased both the cultural heritage and academic achievements of the Ao community.
