The Ao Lanur Telungjem (ALT) has strongly demanded the State government to establish a fire station at Mangkolemba Sub-division without delay, following the devastating fire that occurred on December 8, 2024. The fire destroyed five private residences, two shops, and adjoining godowns, causing significant material loss.
While extending heartfelt sympathies to the fire victims, the ALT expressed its concern over the lack of basic public utilities, including a fire station, in the sub-division. The ALT asserted that the fire incident has highlighted the “utter neglect of the sub-division by the Government over so many years” and called for urgent action to remedy this issue. The statement read: “Even basic public utility like the fire station is not in place.”
Mangkolemba, one of the oldest and most important sub-divisions in Mokokchung district, is also the headquarters for three ranges. The ALT emphasized that the recent fire would not have resulted in such devastation if a fire brigade had been available. They reiterated, “The ALT strongly demands the establishing of a fire station immediately.”
With the dry season now upon the region, the ALT warned that such fire incidents may recur, potentially causing further destruction and loss of life. The group stressed that it is imperative for Mangkolemba Sub-division to have a fire brigade, in addition to other essential amenities, to safeguard its residents. “ALT hopes and expects the Government to positively respond to our genuine demand and initiate the works on priority basis.” In addition to the fire station, the ALT called for the concerned authorities to provide compensation to the victims to help alleviate their loss and misery. “At the same time, the ALT also urges upon the concern authority to provide compensation to the fire victims so that their loss and misery can be alleviated to some extent.”
The statement was signed by Imnaonen Pongen, Convener, and K Tia Longchar, Co-convener, of the Ao Lanur Telungjem.
