Mokokchung, 6 September (MTNews): The Ao Senden on Wednesday after a joint meeting with the All Ward Union Mokokchung Town and the Land Owner Board Mokokchung Town (Ungma, Mokokchung & Khensa Village Councils) have clarified that the “purported report stating that the Ao Senden has ‘accepted’ the 33% Reservation for Women in ULBs during the consultative meeting convened by the State Government on September 1, 2023, is unfounded and, therefore, regrettable.”
This clarification comes in response to certain reports claiming that the Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, stated that the “33% reservation had been accepted” after deliberate discussion.
It may be recalled here that the Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, announced during a press conference on 1 September after the meeting that the controversial Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) election in Nagaland had finally reached a ‘more or less accepted’ solution, except for other areas such as exclusion, omission, and deletion of certain words like ‘tax.’ Kenye also informed that the State Government repealed the Nagaland Municipal Act of 2001 on March 28 to introduce a new Act.
In this context, the Ao Senden has demanded that the Naga people should be consulted before the proposed new Nagaland Municipal Act, being framed by the panel constituted by the Government of Nagaland, is introduced in the Assembly.
“Article 371A must not be compromised while framing the new Act,” stated the Ao Senden. The house also resolved to “support the stance taken with regard to the Supreme Court hearing on the issue of Nagaland Municipal Act.
