Mokokchung, 18 April (MTNews): As Supreme Court calls Nagaland’s way of evading to hold the election by repealing the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 ‘ingenious’, the Supreme Court also issued a contempt notice to state Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for not honouring its order.

The apex court also warned that if those elections are not held as per the constitutional mandate for reservation of seats for women, it would take the matter to its “logical conclusion.”

The Supreme Court also observed that despite the state trying to make it look like it was not a men and women issue, the apex court opined that it was a women empowerment issue.

Following this, the Chief Minister of Nagaland called on Union Minister of Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju today where they held a ‘fruitful discussion about some issues related to Nagaland’, according to Rijuju.

This meeting took place a day after SC asked the Centre to clarify whether the constitutional scheme of one-third reservation for women in municipality and town council elections can be violated by Nagaland.

Meanwhile, amid the controversy over the 33% women reservation on the Nagaland Urban Local body Polls (ULB), Nagaland Cabinet Minister KG Kenye said that the cancelling of the Nagaland Municipal 2001 Act has nothing to do with the women reservation.

Kenye told Northeast Live that the wide consultation with the stakeholders will be held soon before framing the new Act after the hearing on May 1

.
Kenye also said that the State advocates will be presenting the court on what basis the Act was repealed and the constitutional guarantees made in the article 371 A.
”The court was more interested to know about the Art 371 A under which provision the Act was repealed,” he added.

”The next hearing is on 1st of May where our Advocate General will be presenting the entire matter, customary laws and the religious and social practices of our people and the constitutional guarantees made in the article 371 A. In 2 weeks’ time our advocates will be preparing what they will present in the SC next, Kenye said.

Further, according to media reports, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Yanthungo Patton and TR Zeliang, is set to meet Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the long-standing Naga political issue. The discussions are also likely to touch upon the urban local bodies (ULB) issue, which has been a matter of contention in Nagaland.
