Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reviewed the issues concerning the Assam-Nagaland border and highlighted the need for sustained peace, mutual cooperation, and constructive dialogue to ensure long-term harmony and development along the inter-state boundary.

According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Sarma chaired a high-level meeting in Guwahati on Saturday to assess the situation along the 512.1-km shared border with Nagaland. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) later posted details of the meeting on X.

“Assam remains firmly committed to preserving its historical and cultural bonds with Nagaland while advancing a framework of economic collaboration and enduring harmony,” Sarma was quoted as saying during the meeting.

The Assam-Nagaland border has remained a point of contention since Nagaland’s formation in 1963. The matter is currently pending resolution before the Supreme Court.

PTI further reported that, according to data laid in the Assam Assembly, Nagaland has allegedly encroached upon the largest area among Assam’s neighbouring states, with 59,490.21 hectares of land under its “illegal occupation.”
