A fresh dispute has emerged along the Assam-Nagaland border over the proposed eviction of 59 families from No. 2 Negheribil in Golaghat district, after the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation (LLRPO) claimed that the disputed land falls within Nagaland.
The LLRPO has urged the Nagaland government to intervene, claiming that the area forms part of Lukhaium and Mikir Basti in Nagaland. It has also claimed to possess documents showing that some of the residents purchased land in the area.
The organisation has opposed the proposed eviction and described it as a unilateral action by Assam authorities.
The claim has been rejected by residents and organisations in Assam. Raju Narah, village head of No. 2 Negheribil, said families had been living in the area since the 1960s and disputed the assertion that the land belongs to Nagaland, according to The Assam Tribune.
The Takam Mising Porin Kébang (TMPK) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) have also opposed the LLRPO’s claim. AJYCP leader Nikunj Medhi questioned why the issue was not raised when the earlier eviction was carried out in August 2025.
The eviction process was initiated by the Assam Forest Department against settlements considered unauthorised. According to NENow, notices were issued to 205 families in 2025, following which 146 families were evicted.
The remaining 59 families approached the court, temporarily halting further eviction. Following court directions and subsequent legal procedures, the Golaghat district administration and Forest Department on August 16 announced steps to issue notices, conduct demarcation and proceed with further action concerning the remaining settlements.
