Guwahati, 26 January:  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that Dibrugarh will be developed as the second capital of Assam. Speaking on Republic Day, Sarma stated that within the next three years, the district headquarters of Dibrugarh will be transformed into the state’s second capital. This marked the first time the Chief Minister hoisted the national flag in Dibrugarh.

He further revealed that the government plans to build a permanent assembly building in the city, situated on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra in Upper Assam. “Today is an important day in Dibrugarh’s journey to become the second capital of Assam. For the first time, state celebrations are taking place in this historical city. From 2027, one session of the Assam assembly will take place in Dibrugarh every year,” Sarma said.

He further added that along with Dibrugarh, two other cities—Tezpur and Silchar—will also be developed in the coming period.  ”Dibrugarh will be the second capital of Assam in the next three years. We will construct a Raj Bhavan in Tezpur and develop it as the cultural capital of Assam. Silchar will have a secretariat and the chief secretary’s office, thereby bridging the gap between Barak Valley and Guwahati,” he added.

Sarma confirmed that construction for a permanent Assam assembly building in Dibrugarh will begin on January 25 of the following year. “In the next three years, Dibrugarh will become an important city in India,” he added.

Last year, the Chief Minister inaugurated the first Chief Minister’s secretariat outside the state capital in Dibrugarh. (With inputs from agencies)
