In a significant development regarding the controversial regularization of 147 contractual Assistant Professors and Librarians, the Department of Higher & Technical Education has requisitioned 34 Assistant Professor posts to the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) for direct recruitment, and proposed the creation of 129 additional posts to the Manpower Rationalization Committee (MRC).

According to official documents accessed by Mokokchung Times, the requisitioned posts are distributed as follows:
· 25 posts (11 in Humanities & Commerce, 14 in Science),
· 8 posts (7 in Humanities & Commerce, 1 in Science),
· 1 post (Science).

The reservation details for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), in accordance with P&AR Department Notification No. AR-3/Gen-9/97 dated August 13, 2020, are as follows:
· No reservation in the 11 Humanities & Commerce posts; to be carried forward to the next requisition,
· One post in Science reserved under 65 of Block 3, Cycle 1.
· One Humanities & Commerce post (from the 8-post requisition) reserved under 76 of Block 4, Cycle 2.

These developments come in response to a June 11, 2025 representation submitted by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) regarding the future of the 147 contractual faculty members. In its response, the department confirmed that the absorption order was revoked by the State Cabinet on April 21, rendering the posts null and void.

In a separate communication to the Manpower Rationalization Committee (Letter No. HTE/HE/134-3/2020 (Pr-11/739), dated July 2, 2025), the department submitted seven sets of Post Creation Memoranda seeking approval for the creation of 129 Assistant Professor posts across government colleges in Nagaland.

The department also clarified that the High-Powered Committee, constituted on the directive of the State Cabinet, remains the competent authority to examine the absorption issue. Therefore, no further information can be disclosed without Cabinet approval.

It may be recalled that the Cabinet’s initial decision to regularise 147 contractually appointed Assistant Professors and Librarians was met with strong opposition. The Combined Technical Association of Nagaland (CTAN) and the Nagaland NET Qualified Forum (NNQF) protested the move, while the NSF staged a dramatic lockdown of the Directorate of Higher Education on April 30, demanding transparency and fairness in faculty appointments. In the aftermath, the Cabinet rescinded the controversial order and constituted the HPC to review the appointments.
